Today we were invited at Vera and Medets’ daughter Lilu’s 1st birthday party. Your 1st birthday here in Kazakhstan is a huge celebration. The party had a Hawaiian theme because Lilu was conceived in Hawaii. We had a great time and enjoyed getting another nice taste of Kazakh culture. It was very well decorated. They had an M.C., DJ, a singer, dancers and a clown that played games with the kids and adults. When Kazakhstan babies celebrate their first birthday, their tradition is that they tie a rope around both ankles and a older relative or grandmother (preferably someone who has had a nice life and has children) must cut it off and she then has to walk. This represents to wish her good luck in her future. During the meal some people from every table were called up to make a speech for Lilu, this is also another Kazakh tradition. We had a wonderful time with Kazakhstan people and their food was very good. Here in Kazakhstan a lot of the woman and men drink Vodka straight up.
